YVR Art Foundation extends our deepest condolences to the family members of Haida artist Ben Davidson, also known by his Haida name Tlajang nang kingaas (the one who is known far away), who unexpectedly passed away on August 15, 2020 at the age of 44. Ben was a gifted artist whose artwork has been exhibited around the world and is held in numerous private collections.
A member of the Raven clan, Ben apprenticed with his father, Haida carver Robert Davidson, and was known for his artistic ability and works in a variety of media. Both Robert Davidson and Ben’s uncle Reg Davidson have mentored YVR Art Foundation emerging artist Scholarship recipients, and Ben carried on their dedication to the community through his own mentorships with Haida youth.
Ben was original member of the Rainbow Creek Dancers and he established All About U Arts on Haida Gwaii, a gallery showcasing his artwork alongside other Haida artists. He received a Fulmer Award in First Nations Art from the B.C. Achievement Foundation in 2014.
He will be greatly missed.
The Globe & Mail recently posted an obituary which includes photos of Ben and his work and can be read here.
