Note: A Youth Art Scholarship can be awarded to an individual a maximum of two times.

Personal Information
Applicants for the YVR Art Foundation Youth Art Scholarship must be between 16 to 26 years of age (born between 1992 and 2002)

Have you previously received an award, grant or scholarship from the YVR Art Foundation? If so, list the date and type of award.
Please include transcripts from the last school you attended.

Describe your art work. For example: What type of art do you do? What materials do you work with? Have you worked with a mentor or taken any art classes or training? Do you do art work on your own, at school or with other artists? Have you exhibited or shown your art anywhere?

Program of Study

Youth Art Scholarships are awarded on an annual basis to emerging artists who create visual art that reflects BC or Yukon First Nations' culture and who wish to develop their artistic potential.

For the Program of Study you may propose to work with an artist mentor or attend a recognized school of art. Within a period of one year scholarship recipients must complete an art work that demonstrates the development of skills and techniques learned as a result of the scholarship. This work will be displayed at the Vancouver International Airport for one year.

If you propose to study with an artist mentor, please describe what the mentor will be teaching you and what the proposed schedule would be: for example, three hours once a week for six months, two hours every day for six months, etc. You must also submit a letter from your mentor stating that they have agreed to mentor you and how they will be able to assist you, and include a brief summary describing their experience in this area. You must also submit your mentor’s Biography or Curriculum Vitae (see Submission Materials Uploader below).

If you propose to attend a recognized school of art, please describe your proposed program of study, a timeline, and description of what you hope to learn in this program. You must submit a confirmation of acceptance letter for the proposed program of study from the school of art you will be attending (if available).

Describe in detail the type of art work that you would propose to create for exhibit at the Vancouver International Airport. The work should illustrate the skills, techniques and what you hope to learn in your proposed Program of Study.

Note: the art work you propose to create for display at YVR must fit within the YVR display case dimensions (43″ w × 29″ d × 66″ h).

Provide information here on how the scholarship funds will be used as described in the Program of Study section above.

Budget items might include:

  • Tuition/School Fees (if applicable)
  • Tools, Materials and Supplies
  • Travel Expenses (if applicable e.g. you need to travel to your artist mentor)
  • Living Expenses (Maximum $1,000)
  • Mentor honorarium (optional - maximum $1,000)
  • Other budget items

Note: Youth Art Scholarship recipients will receive $2,000 at the Scholarship Awards Reception on May 25th, 2018; $1,000 in November 2018 (upon receipt of the mid-year update report); $1,000 upon delivery of their final art work, which must be received at YVR on or before April 30th, 2019; and $1,000 at the Scholarship Awards Reception on May 31st, 2019.

*Living expenses and the amount paid to the mentor may not exceed $1,000 each.

Your personal statement is an opportunity for you to introduce yourself to the Jury and to include any information about yourself that is not covered elsewhere in the application, and that you feel is important for the Jury to know in making their decision.

A. Two Reference Letters

1. A personal reference - from anyone who has known you for a number of years, other than immediate family, and who has some insight into your character, goals and individuality.

2. An artistic reference - from an art teacher, mentor or individual with an art background who can speak to your artistic potential.

Reference letters must include the following information:

  • The full name of the applicant (you)
  • The full name, address and phone number of the person writing the reference
  • The relationship between the applicant and the person writing the reference
  • The length of time the person writing the reference has known the applicant
  • The reasons why the applicant should receive this scholarship

B. Mentor Biography/Curriculum Vitae or Confirmation Letter

1. If you propose to study with an artist mentor you must submit your mentor's current Biography or Curriculum Vitae (maximum 2 pages).

2. If you propose to attend a recognized school of art, you must submit a confirmation of acceptance letter (if available) for the proposed Program of Study at the art school you will be attending. 

C. Transcripts

Please include a copy of your transcript from the last school you attended.

D. Portfolio 

Your portfolio sample is an important component of your application package. It is an opportunity for you to show the Jury some of your artistic achievements and potential.
Please use the following guidelines to create your portfolio sample.

Portfolio Guidelines:

  • Include a range of media or, if you have worked in only one medium, provide a wide range of samples.
  • Include no more than ten photographs of your work.
  • If possible, include self-initiated work as well as work assigned in a class.
  • If you submit work that was created with another artist, please name the other artist(s) and identify that the work is a collaboration or that you were an assistant on the project.

Film/video portfolio submissions:

  • If you wish to include an example of your film or video work in your portfolio you may submit this through Dropbox or a similar file sharing medium. You must notify us that you will be submitting film/video and by which method by contacting in advance of your submission.
  • If you are submitting your film or video work for your entire portfolio you may submit no more than three videos at a maximum of five minutes each.
  • If you are submitting your film or video work as part of your portfolio, each video submitted is the equivalent of submitting three photographs. For example, if you submit two videos you may only include four additional  photographs in your portfolio submission.

Digital portfolio submissions:

  • Use .jpg or .tif file types.
  • Files must have a minimum 1024 x 768 pixel resolution.
